Abstract Phaseolus vulgaris is the major bean crop being an essential food and a main protein source cultivated across the world including Pakistan. Current study was carried out to investigate the morphological traits and molecular characterization of Phaseolus vulgaris genotypes by using RNA Sequencing based transcriptome profiling. The evaluation of the socioeconomic significance and livelihood support provided by Phaseolus vulgaris cultivation to the rural populations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan was another objective. The morphological and agronomic traits of 75 common bean genotypes were evaluated during the growing seasons of 2017 and 2018 in an experimental field using randomized complete block design with three replications. The genotypes were evaluated for a total of 23 morpho-agronomic traits including 13 quantitative and 10 qualitative traits. Considerable variations were observed in the qualitative traits with the highest frequency value recorded for indeterminate climber growth habit. The studied genotypes showed diversity with predominance of red seed colour and medium seed size with no seed pattern. Analysis of variance of quantitative morpho-agronomic traits revealed considerable variation in the genotypes as was demonstrated by mean comparison of genotypes. High heritability with high genotypic coefficient of variance and genetic advance as percent of mean were observed for hundred seed weight followed by days to flowering, plant height, stem girth and pod beak length that indicating simultaneous inheritance of these traits in nature with additive gene effects.
